Faculty Trains 2022 Winter Olympics Healthcare Professionals on Medical English and Cross-Cultural Doctor-Patient Communication

  In order to enhance doctor-patient communication proficiency in English and cross-cultural awareness of the 2022 Winter Olympics medical team in Zhang Jiakou, the Health Commission of Zhangjiakou, Hebei Province, invited faculty members from the School of Medical Humanities to attend the Distribution Ceremony of The 2022 Winter Olympics English Coursebook for Healthcare Professionals in Winter Sports and the following training sessions for the Winter Olympics healthcare professionals held on June 3, 2020. The following people attended the onsite ceremony and training: leaders from the Health Commission of Zhang Jiakou City, Prof. Ao Yingfang, Director of the Sports Medicine Institute and president of Chongli Division of Peking University Third Hospital, vice president Prof. Zheng Ya’an, all leading members of this hospital and the representatives from the eight designated hospitals providing medical services for the 2020 Olympic Games. Other healthcare professionals from these designated hospitals and other hospitals attended the ceremony and training session via video conferencing facilities.

 

 

 

 

  Prof. Guo Liping, vice dean of the School of Health Humanities, Peking University and editor-in-chief of The 2022 Winter Olympics English Coursebook for Healthcare Professionals in Winter Sports , and associate editor associate professor Tian Dongmei attended the ceremony and training sessions. In the training session, Professor Guo Liping first introduced the process, contents and limitations and ways of using the coursebook. She then focused on the learning strategies of medical English and cross-cultural doctor-patient communication. The healthcare professionals attending the training expressed their gratitude to professor Guo for providing such valuable training and they said they had every confidence to improve their communication proficiency in English and cross-cultural communication awareness for the coming Winter Olympics.

 

  

 

  The Coursebook consists of three parts, including doctor-patient conversations, readings and  appendices. In the conversations part, the textbook follows the outpatient consultation process which consists of receiving patients, taking history, examining patients, giving results and planning treatment. It offers twenty-two typical conversations of this process, as well as conversations in communicating with difficult patients, on-site paramedics and nurse-patient communication in both English and Chinese. In addition, the book includes typical cases of sports injury and common acute disease diagnosis and treatment, as well as a winter sports related vocabulary, and a list of comparisons between lay expressions and medical terms.
